Materials in this collection include the personal files of Ray H. Hughes from 1945-2010. Much of the collection covers his ministry as an evangelist, pastor, church leader, and international leadership positions. Included in the collection are many of Dr. Hughes’ sermons, position papers, and correspondence while serving in numerous positions. Dr. Hughes used an alphabetized subject heading filing system. It appears he was interested in using the Dewey Decimal system for filing and upkeep of his personal library. Over the years as he downsized offices he made three separate donations to the research center. When the materials were gathered they were kept in as much order as possible, however due to the fact that after each reduction he still needed to maintain files in his office there were duplicate files created for his office. In order to make the best usability of his collection the arranger has left them in as much original order as possible. The series created are based on the areas where a distinct separation could be made. He labeled everything that was not directly related to a designated “office” in which he was serving as “Personal Files.” There are multiple copies of many sermons. He would continually revise and reuse them, marking the changes on them. Therefore the duplicates have not been removed but neither are they housed all together.

Note: Series 9: Evangelism and Subseries 5.5 Sermon Alphabetical File: It was difficult to tell where these files were in original order. The subject files on evangelism may have originally been in 2.2. The subject files on evangelism have been combined (by the arranger) with a seminary class on evangelism taught by Dr. Hughes. There are sermons dispersed throughout the files. These have also been kept with evangelism. The files have been transferred under the same headings assigned by the author. Series 5.5 Sermon Alphabetical File contains sermons on Evangelism and they have not been separated. There are materials that were difficult to discern as to whether or not they were related to research for books. The bulk of materials were kept together.

Hughes was the Forward in Faith radio speaker from 1960 To 1963. During this early development of radio preaching Hughes often saved other denominational printed radio sermons such as the Methodist Men’s Hour and the Billy Graham’s Hour of Decision. Most of these have been separated and noted.

As an educational leader, college president, and seminary president Hughes collected and studied materials that concerned higher education schools. These materials ranged in the form of brochures, newspaper articles, magazine articles, construction manuals, college reports, commencement brochures, etc. Some of these remain in specific folders and some was separated. The method for determine came from what was already filed and what was loose with a destination undetermined by Hughes. They neither offered to nor took away from what can be learned about Hughes from the rest of the collection.

Biographical information includes a chronology of his life and ministry.
