Biographical / Historical
Rufus Royd Walker was born in southern Mississippi in 1895. He was called into the Baptist ministry as a young man and attended Mississippi College in preparation for pastoring. After graduation in 1927, he moved to Morgantown, Mississippi where he served as principal and coach at the high school while he also pastored two Baptist congregations. Over time, he developed a close association with the Church of God in Morgantown. Walker and his wife, Leedie, testified to having received sanctification and the baptism of the Holy Ghost. They joined the Church of God at Morgantown on May 13, 1933. The family moved to Cleveland, Tennessee where he first served as Bible Training School Academy principal. He would also serve the Chruch of God as pastor, state overseer, Superintendent of the Home for Children, and general secretary-treasurer. He is believed to be the first Church of God minister to have held a bachelor's degree. He passed away in 1976.
