Scope and Contents

The Katherine McGahee Black Ministries Collection is a culmination of programs and periodicals dealing with the Church of God in Florida as well as Black Ministries within the Church of God. There are 4 boxes in the collection. There are programs from numerous conferences and retreats as well as copies of periodicals related to Black Ministries.

This is an excellent source for anyone looking to research the Church of God in Florida including black church histories, national and state conventions, ladies’ retreats, individual files and a few issues of periodicals and newsletters.

Biographical / Historical

Katherine, only child of James H. and Sophia E. Mason and biological father Herbert Mitchell, was born on August 30, 1935 in Green Cove Springs, Florida. She was reared in Fernandina Beach, Florida and later moved to Jacksonville Beach, Florida to assist her grandparents in a community food store. She accepted Christ at age nine and continuously served him from that point. She became a member of the Church of God in 1945 and a member of the Jacksonville District in 1953. She married Jim L. McGahee in November of 1953. Together the McGahee’s had 7 children as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

1967-1987 Continued Education: Florida Bible Institute (FBI) Lee College

1980 Called from God to be “His Hands Extended”

1981-1982 Lady of the Year: Church of God

1982-2002 Duval County School Board – 17 years Title 1 program

Other assignments: Mary McCloud Bethune and Sallye B. Mathis Elementary Schools

1984-1994 Toastmasters International Member

1986 Profiled in book: “Black Women In the Church”

1987-1994 President, Lillian R. Bradley Toastmasters Club

1989 Coordinator: Leadership Program for the Raines High School Toastmasters Tots and Teens

1996 Compiled a book and taught etiquette for teenagers prior to Prom activities

1997 Graduated from Jacksonville Theological seminary with Master of Religious Arts in Theology

1999-2001 Counselor at Youth Crisis Center

2001 Ordination Certified: Church of God Sanctuary of Praise
