Biographical / Historical

Willie Louis Ford was born January 20, 1908, to Lena Carter Ford and Reverend Ernest Ford, Sr. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and joined the Church of God December 27, 1925. He married Cleotha Williams in June 1928. Ford was credentialed as a Church of God minister January 14, 1929, and became a Bishop April 28, 1932. Cleotha received her Church of God minister’s license August 1, 1946. Together they “pastored Churches in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and Kentucky. In 1946, he was appointed General Overseer of the Church of God (Black Affairs) [Colored Work] and served for two terms of four years per term [1946-1950, 1954-1958].” W. L. Ford died Saturday, August 15, 1987.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

The items had previously been stored in a garage and had some environmental damage. Insects damaged many of the paper materials in this collection.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

In 2006, Bishop Ernest Ford, Jr. (W.L. Ford’s brother) donated W. L. Ford’s desk, typewriter, reel-to-reel recording machine, lamp, sermons, books, Bibles, and papers.
