Biographical / Historical
Wallace Sibley was born on June 30, 1938. He married Dorothy Herring in August of 1964. They had four children. Dr. Sibley received his call into the ministry under E.M. Parris’s ministry. He started out as an evangelist, mostly in Georgia and Florida. In 1963, he not only organized the Woodbine Church of God, but he also received his first pastoral position at the East Cumming St. Church of God. He went to Edward Waters College studying English and graduated in 1969, quickly becoming a high school teacher. He graduated in 1972 with a master’s degree in administration from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and then became a dean. He continued working in education until 1978; this is when he felt a call to full-time ministry.
Dr. Sibley’s first Church of God office was as regional director of evangelism for the Southeastern Black churches (1978–1982). Dr. Sibley served as the state administrative bishop of Florida (Cocoa) from 1982 until 1986. In 1986, he made Church of God history by becoming the first person of color to be elected to the Council of Eighteen as he began serving as an International Evangelist. Between 1996 and 2000, he served as administrative bishop for Southern New England. Then he served as the director of Cross Cultural Ministries 2000–2004, assistant director and director of Evangelism and Home Missions 2004–2008 (first person of color elected to these positions). In 2008, he was elected as Secretary General; the first person of color to be elected onto the International Executive Committee. In 2012, he received the honor of inclusion in the Hall of Prophets at Pentecostal Theological Seminary for his service. That same year, Dr. Sibley became Third Assistant General Overseer. Following his tenure there, Dr. Sibley served on the International Advisory Council, World Missions board, and the board of Operation Compassion.
